Poland summoned the Russian charge d’affaires and demanded an explanation for the violation of Poland’s airspace by a missile and an immediate halt to such activities, Poland’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Friday evening.

According to the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, a Russian missile entered the airspace of the NATO member on Friday morning. Ukrainian authorities had reported a mass attack on various cities throughout Ukraine overnight.

“On Friday at 7:12 local time (01:12 ET), from the direction of the border with Ukraine, there was a violation of Polish airspace by an object that left Poland’s territory after less than three minutes,” Poland’s General Staff wrote on X social media.

This kinda makes me curious, what does a diplomat actually do when summoned in this kind of scenario? Apologize? Just relay communication between governments? I can’t imagine they can actually promise much, given that they don’t have any say in their country’s military policy

Summoning them costs 25 mana, you can’t directly control them and they disappear after two minutes. Also if you summon them again when they are already summoned, the prior summon will re replaced by the new summon.

A diplomat’s job is to manage relationships with a foreign entity. They have limited power in what they can actually do, but are invaluable in preventing misunderstandings and in forging alliances. Imagine it as a waiter, they will try their best to serve you but they won’t be able to make the food taste good.

what does a diplomat actually do when summoned in this kind of scenario?

In this specific case, publish a statement saying:

“I was handed a note which contained an unsubstantiated claim that allegedly on the morning of 29th December, an airborne object violated Polish airspace, which Polish specialists identified as a Russian guided missile. No proof was presented. My request for documented proof of what was in the note was refused.”

I understand and support the idea bit Poland can’t afford such action.

If Poland takes down an object invading their air space, of probable russian origin, it can be considered a first hostile movement and Russia can move to retaliate.

Being part of the EU, Poland shooting first would drag the entire bloc into an open armed conflict. It may happen but not yet.

I am surprised it wasn’t shot down after entering the airspace. I would expect that of a NATO country when a neighboring country is invaded.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

RIA Novosti News agency quoted Russia’s charge d’affaires in Warsaw Andrei Ordash as saying Poland had provided no proof of a border violation.

“I told the chargé d’affaires clearly that the repeating of such attempts will be met with a stronger reaction from the Republic of Poland, because it is testing our effectiveness and our approach to defense,” Bartoszewski said according to PAP.

In November 2022, a stray Ukrainian missile struck the Polish village of Przewodow in southern Poland killing two people and raising fears at the time of the war in Ukraine spilling over the border.

Earlier on Friday private broadcaster TV Republika had reported that a search for the object was happening near the town of Hrubieszow in southern Poland.

General Maciej Klisz, operational commander of the Polish armed forces said the missile had flown 25 miles into Poland and that no action was taken against it.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk met army and security services chiefs around midday local time (1100 GMT) to discuss the incident.

The original article contains 579 words, the summary contains 169 words. Saved 71%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
