In a letter to congressional leaders, Biden urged Congress to restore funding to the Small Business Administration’s disaster loan program as it faces potential funding shortfalls.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday did not commit to calling Congress back into session before the election after President Joe Biden pressed congressional leaders about potential funding shortfalls in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Johnson was asked about Biden’s letter to congressional leaders on Friday requesting more money for federal disaster recovery efforts and after Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned that the department doesn’t have enough money to get through the rest of hurricane season.

Congress has taken swift action on funding natural disaster relief efforts in the past even when it was on recess, a Biden administration official noted when reached for comment.

He absolutely should. I’m in nc (not far enough west to be affected by the storm though) and folks who are hurting really need the help. Plus it’d make cogress look stupid that the president had to hold their hand and say “okay now, let’s go do our jobs to help the constituents facing natural disaster. I know you don’t want to but part of growing up is having responsibilities”

This is the correct answer, although you know somehow Rs will twist into “fascism” and “authoritarianism”.

They’ve already gone all in on some bullshit like FEMA spent all their money on immigrants that’s why they’re running out.

I saw this posted on Facebook by a relative. I spent two hours researching and crafting a response that I sent privately. No response. The next day they’re posting more bullshit

For what it’s worth, this was the message. Maybe it could have been better, but I sent to hours into the void in a vain attempt to get through.

Newsmax and propaganda like it are poison that don’t reflect reality. Most “mainstream” news can be biased in what they report, but they generally are truthful when stating facts. Newsmax in particular is propaganda intended to enable grifters and foreign interests by convincing us of bullshit. It can absolutely be convincing bullshit if they can do the cult thing of cutting off friends, family, and any unapproved news source. They all reinforce each other and any story sounds good if you only hear one side. Here’s the other side; it’s up to you to decide which one makes more sense.

As Helene was coming, Congress voted against additional Funding for FEMA. The President (or Vice President) doens’t get a say there.

Money isn’t being diverted to immigrants. “FEMA’s disaster response efforts and individual assistance is funded through the Disaster Relief Fund, which is a dedicated fund for disaster efforts. Disaster Relief Fund money has not been diverted to other, non-disaster related efforts.”

That money can only be legally “diverted” without an act of Congress to “hurricane, tornado, storm, high water, winddriven water, tidal wave, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, landslide, mudslide, snowstorm, or drought), or, regardless of cause, any fire, flood, or explosion”. It’s not being diverted to immigrants.

Is $750 supposed to be too much money given away or not enough? What number should that be? And you can get more if you qualify. It’s only the $750 that is instant while they check to see where the money will be spent. Their point is just to make you angry, not to find actualy solutions. You can legitmately argue against any dollar amount. Do you think there’s a dollar amount (even $0) where Newsmax wouldn’t be angry?

We’re having more and worse hurricanes because of climate change and CO2 emissions that we’re not doing much to stop.

Republicans are the ones who voted against extending funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), including both Alabama senators.

Gov. Evers in Wisconsin sometimes does that for the Republican legislature. They gavel in and out within 60 seconds.

Thats fine. The narrative then puts everything on Republicans.

The Republicans feel that inhibiting the federal government’s ability to prevent people from dying will help their election chances. It’s as simple as that.

It’s even simpler than that. We’re four weeks to the election, everyone in the house of reps is busy campaigning for reelection. Nobody wants to go to DC and work, letting the campaign challengers run around your district unopposed.

And what would be the point if they did come back? Johnson couldn’t get his party to pass a continuing resolution to find the government Republican sweeteners attached (voter id law). How the fuck is he going to get his party on board for “government handouts” without the freedom caucus making some asinine demand that tanks the whole thing. Johnson certainly doesn’t want to remind voters of the shit show of distinction that is the Republican controlled House weeks before an election.

Pull all your vulnerable members off the campaign trail in the final weeks so that you can put on a fuck fuck circus generating daily headlines about how Republicans can’t govern? Fat fucking chance.

And if Biden calls a special session, Republicans are going to say it’s political to make them look bad, cause they can’t govern.

This guy is an evil fuck, who uses his religion to justify and convince himself he’s a hero.

    He’s not. he’s just a jackass.

Edit: here’s a Louis Rossman rant on why you shouldn’t assume you’re a good person. Johnson is a perfect example of an evil fuck that has stopped checking. Johnson believes he’s a New Moses™️, appointed or sent by god to …“save” america. Therefore it’s totally acceptable to fuck over thousands of people. because he can spin it as “biden didn’t get your aid!” and maybe stay in power longer.

Also, he shares his porn viewing habbits with his son.

They want fuel for Trump’s lie that Biden is withholding money or gave all the disaster relief money to migrants.

    From WaPo

IV fluid supplies dwindle as Helene closes N.C. manufacturing plant It is a reflection of the far-reaching consequences of Hurricane Helene and the resulting supply chain interruptions.

By Sabrina Malhi and Lizette Ortega October 3, 2024 at 7:38 p.m. EDT

Hospitals across the country are facing disruptions in the availability of some sterile intravenous fluids, a reflection of the far-reaching consequences of Hurricane Helene and the resulting supply chain interruptions.

Baxter International, the country’s largest manufacturer of IV solutions, alerted hospitals that a Marion, N.C., manufacturing plant was temporarily closed because of flooding. Baxter produces 1.5 million bags of IV solution a day, according to the American Hospital Association.

A sane tactical decision on his part - he’s aware his party would never actually pass more relief funding and just spout performative bullshit.

He’s still 100% an asshole but this is the political move to make.

Not to mention that by not going through the theater of his republican colleagues refusing to help save lives, he can instead do nothing, which will likely cause deaths, which he can then just blame on Biden, truth being meaningless at this point for Republicans.

Think about the immigration bill. No matter how many times Republican voters are told that Trump specifically and intentionally made the immigrant crisis worse by torpedoing a bi-partisan bill, they refuse to believe it. There is no way Trump supporters would ever dare blame their daddy or his surrogate, Johnson, for literally attempting to kill them.

You can see why people refer to Trump supporters as a death cult.
