As someone that grades undergraduates, I’m happy that they not use the letter “x” to imply multiplication.

I switched to raccoon from eternity due to eternity not being updated anymore.
Powerpoint is what made me originally vow to try to never use word or powerpoint again, about 15 years ago. I was making a mathematically-dense presentation and became so frustrated with it that I wanted to throw my computer out the window. I still was somewhat new to latex at the time but figured there had to be some way to make presentations in latex. Found beamer and have never used pp for a real presentation again.
Nope. Played it all the way through when it first came out. But haven’t touched it since then.
I fired up fallout 1 after watching it.
I just built a amd 7600 system in January 2024 and had no issues. Not sure that counts as very new but it was for me!
I dumped ubuntu for debian 12 due to snaps, and i’m very happy so far. I run sway as my window manager. I guess we’ll see how i feel in a year but i honestly can’t think of any software i run that i’m simply fine with it not being the most recent. I’m even using the firefox-esr version that debian ships with and it’s fine.
Have an amd card. Have never done any special steps to update my graphics card, as amd drivers are just built into the kernel. I used to have a nvidia card and it was like 2 or 3 commands to enable proprietary drivers and was then always notified and updated with my usual software package upgrades.
Granted i haven’t run windows for over 15 years but I remember having to go to nvidia’s website and manually download and install new nvidia drivers to update. Is this still true? If so, this is simply objectively worse.
I’ll agree with a decent amount of gaming. Unless it’s steam, getting wine set up, even with lutris, can be a hassle.
Yup. I teach at a university. It used to be adequate for instructions to say something along the lines of
open the file C://Folder/anotherfolder/subfolder/document.ext
I encounter more and more students every year that have no idea how to do this.
Looks delicious!
I never trust X minutes per pound. Meat thermometers are cheap and so useful.
Also, my Mother taught me the reverse sear method and that’s my preferred cooking method for a prime rib.
Sway is basically the wayland version of i3. I’ve switched to wayland on my new laptop and learning sway after using i3 for years has been relatively easy.
Yeah there’s definitely a learning curve. A little coding experience makes the task easier. I typically give my students a template that they put their own text into that includes a peer-reviewed journal format and an example equation, table, and figure.
There’s still the “not so short introduction to latex” out there that helped me learn the basics back in the day.
Physics professor here. I tell my students that i will give them unlimited help and assistance if they want to learn latex. I find that most students prefer latex once they get the hang of it.
I’m incredibly biased though. There is rarely a situation that I would prefer to use word over latex.
Or just don’t use a figure or table environment. Those are what specify it as a float. If you really must have that image or table at some specific location, just do a center environment with a captionof from the caption package.
This latex “annoyance” is unwarranted as figure/table environments are specifically telling latex that this location doesn’t need to be precisely here and please place it somewhere that will look better. The problem is that when people google “how to make a figure in latex” they see a result done this way and don’t know that figure/table is not required.
I teach an electronics class and a barebones version of this is one of the early logic gate labs: an SR latch built using NAND gates. It can set and reset a bit!
User you are replying to wasn’t replying to OP?
Maybe my reading comprehension is bad, but it seemed obvious to me user was replying to a specific comment seeing how it was a reply to that nerd comment instead of OP and post used the phrase “this comment”.
I haven’t used discord on sway yet, but from some reading around as i will likely be upgrading pcs and switching to sway (wayland) from i3 (xorg), i think it is discord doesn’t play nice with wayland.
Yep. I have three brothers. My dad used ranked choice voting for us when we were kids all the time on “flavors” of things we needed to buy: ice cream, candy, toothpaste, etc. We understood it with no issues.
it was amusing seeing the look on a friend’s face when my dad would barge into the room with 5 different toothpastes and ask, “which of these do you like the best?” Followed shortly by “which of these do you like 2nd best?”
I’m certainly not a hardware expert but i’ve also been researching a new machine and everything i see about power supplies seems to suggest those 80+ ratings are mostly meaningless and suggest the cultists tier list
I’m a big fan of a pizza stone. Wasn’t too expensive and works well for reheating or fresh home-made pizza.
