Yeah that competition really did demonstrate what an awful service all those media monopolies provided.

You can just hire cops to be private security, no tax dollars necessary. The neat part is that even if they aren’t acting in an official capacity, they can still use police resources (like squad cars), wear police uniforms, and they’re still police (with all the same privileges, lack of liability, and license to murder).
someone’s self awareness of the limitations of their own knowledge and willingness to defer to experts.
This is a cornerstone of ethics in engineering and many other discipline that I feel is being shouted down daily by a crowd that clearly never took a philosophy or ethics class. Even among engineers it seems to be an increasingly unpopular attitude. It seems to have become popular to praise the braggart and shun the ethical self aware.
Literally the only reason I’ve ever used it is so that when I start typing a web address in front of someone, Google doesn’t “helpfully” autocomplete.
Aren’t there any other sites that start with p or x?
Clyde Butcher is one of the greatest American landscape photographers since Ansel Adams and a true hero of modern naturalism. Not only does he hike out into the swamp under conditions that would make most here wilt like cotton candy in the rain (see other comments), he often does it with camera equipment that is ancient, heavy, and bulky by today’s standards.
The biggest danger in the Everglades isn’t leeches (not at all common), brain eating amoebas (just keep your head above water), snakes (most would rather just slither away), snapping turtles (only aggressive when trapped), or gators (generally slow, predictable, dumb, and avoidable); it’s ignorance. The swamp isn’t a place into which you’d want to be dropped off unprepared and unequipped, but neither is LA of New York City. Clive Butcher walks the line between tough man and sensitive artist, cottage-core and goblin-core, Lorax and Crocodile Dundee.
Clive Butcher also did a landscape photography series of Salvador Dali’s home town that really opened my eyes about the scenes and settings in many of Dali’s paintings. It becomes clear that although surreal, many of the landscapes in Dali’s paintings are actually surprisingly real places painted literally but adorned with surreal characters and objects.
Capitalism by design will always overwork labor. In this example, the employees finally feel their workload easing but soon enough there will be fewer of them doing the same work they’re doing now and the individuals that remain employeed will be overworked again.
I sick of seeing Google Drive recommended as an alternative to dropbox. (Because I am looking for an alternative to dropbox and so far nothing has feature parity with it and the features I value.) If an app forces me to be logged in to a graphical environment locally on Linux then it has already failed to understand why people use *nix. Google Drive doesn’t keep offline copies and it doesn’t work on CLI. So basically useless on my server. If the files aren’t natively and transparently accesible as a local filesystem while they are synced to the cloud, it’s not a viable Linux Dropbox alternative. I want my files on my machine and a copy on the cloud, not the other way round.
I don’t know man. If at 50 I ran into a 20 something that was into dating me, I’d feel more like prey than a predator. But, who am I kidding? If the roles were reversed and I was a 20 something encountering a 50+ cougar, I’d still feel like prey. It’s definitely all about power dynamics, but I don’t think making assumptions about adult people’s situations based on age alone is appropriate or helpful.
Yes, I thought I was very clear that I was explaining my rationalization for why Fahrenheit is my preferred arbitrary system for a specific use case. Fahrenheit is arbitrary and centered around human existence. Celsius is also arbitrary and centered around the phase changes of water. I made no mention of season because again, that is totally arbitrary, not universal, and depends wholly on geography. The only temperature scale that even gets close to trying to not be arbitrary is Kelvin, but I don’t see you bullying for it’s everyday use.
Are you writing to Google drive directly from the cli? If so how? I regularly need to search, edit, copy, and paste to and from my notes; backup config files; save a neat little script I wrote; etc. all from the CLI. It would be awesome to have this searchable and online from a web browser too for when I’m not working in the terminal. For example, piping an error message to a file and grabbing/sanitizing that error to search later. I have ways, but their all a lot clunkier than simply have a Dropbox. I’m basically looking for something that works just like Dropbox, is not self hosted, and not as cumbersome to setup as NextCloud and the like.
Because of its scale, Fahrenheit works better for describing the temperature as it relates to people and how comfortable or dangerous it is. Celsius obviously works better for science and engineering. Both systems are arbitrary and either will work once your used to them obviously. Fahrenheit is anthrocentric. Celsius is centered around the phase changes of water at a standard (arbitrary) pressure. The only temperature scale that approaches universality and attempts to not be arbitrary is the Kelvin.
Fahrenheit is my preferred scale when dealing with weather and heating/cooling my home because with Fahrenheit, you can describe almost the entire range of normal human experience from freezing to death to burning to death with (almost always) only two digits and no sign change. If you see an extra digit or a negative sign on the Fahrenheit scale you know shit just got real. And as for the numbers in between 0-100, you can conceptualize them as a simple decimal range like we do for lots of other statistical things like movie ratings, school/exam grading brackets, political polls on TV, percentages, etc.
Also, it’s older than Rock and Roll. It’s from a time when big sound meant more band members, but the current music ecomony doesn’t seem well suited to supporting acts with lots of members. I long for asignificant fourth wave ska revival.
Duckduckgo is basically just bing results. But, I still use it for the bangs and lessened tracking. Being able to search any engine from the same search bar is remarkably convenient.
If you’re going to all that trouble, why not try some open source alternatives next upgrade before shelling out for another license? You might be surprised how narrow the gap between Microsoft and libre office options has become.
It’s not arbitrary just because you don’t understand the how and why of it. The expression could certainly be written more clearly, but that’s an entirely separate matter.
Passwords are keys, not eggs. You wouldn’t hide your house keys all over town, you’d keep them on your key ring and maybe give a spare to a single trusted person that explicitly would not be carrying it around town exposing your key to the risk of theft.
No they haven’t. This is stuff is commonly installed with updates from the carrier.
You don’t need insane hardware to get started with Plex, but you’ll soon realize why some go a little nuts with it.
Sure the brain may survive, but will the consciousness that you identify as you survive?
