I visit Texas kinda often and it’s crazy how many people just don’t bother to vote, because they’ve made it so hard to vote.

There’s that, but there’s also a lot of learned helplessness. People assume that the state will always be red, so they don’t vote, thereby ensuring the state stays red and reinforcing the learned helplessness and teaching it to new generations. It doesn’t help that vulnerable minorities are fleeing the state, for understandable reasons, naturally, but everyone who leaves is one less vote against the entrenched republican hegemony.

Much of Republican policy in the state is centered around preserving this hegemony for its own sake. If you look at Republican policy through that lens, it becomes clear that Republicans have identified which demographics are likely to vote for Democrats, and are deliberately implementing policies to incarcerate or drive off those demographics.

When that dam finally breaks, Republicans are gonna have a very hard time coming back from it. Not only at the state level, but at the national level. So if Allred wins, expect every possible dirty trick. Expect the Supreme Court to get involved.

She just made the announcement for the first time in this campaign, so not stated that yet, but she has pushed for legalization via legislation in the past as a senator and called for faster action for the DEA on rescheduling as VP

In fairness, she pushed for that legislation in 2018 when Trump was president. I’ve seen Democrats introduce a lot of things when they know they stand no chance of passing. I hope a plan will be forthcoming. At the moment, we have a campaign promise.

I’m aware of the avenues by which it could be legalized. I asked what Harris’ plan is. If she hasn’t released one yet, fine. She only just announced it. But I would like some specifics from her campaign at some point, because Biden’s efforts have been disappointing to everyone who considers Biden to be fallible.

I live in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Everything is really spread out here and it’s one of the places in the US where you just need a car. Lots of people here commute and a lot of them get their news from radio while driving. People who have the radio on at work will often have it on a talk station.

We had an NPR affiliate, but that went away in 2019. The only people on terrestrial radio in this area talking about current events now are right wing grievance screaming. I’ve watched this region become more conservative during that time.
