I had a cat with diabetes and they never even gave me a tester… just said 1 unit of Lantus a day.

I bought one myself. He’s been on Vetsulin for 3 months and still drinking water like crazy. I’ve heard Lantus is better but I have a vial of Vetsulin to use up so I want to better monitor him.

I see, it seems to be “porcine insulin zinc suspension”, which I think used to be used in humans but isn’t any longer. I thought perhaps it might be Levemir or NPH. Lantus is definitely pretty good… not just for cats, I have T1 so I’ve tried various insulins. It’s quite stable over 24 hours.

The three diabetics I’ve cared for were all best controlled with a combination of diet and Levemir. Fancy Feast pate-style and no dry food; no need for “special” (read “way overpriced” food).

Check with Diabetic Cats in Need about the best ways to source Levemir or Lantus. I used to live in the Detroit area and just drove to Canada for it where it is over-the-counter and less expensive…
