People need to start pushing for publicly owned infrastructure. It’s a national security issue, not to mention long term investment issue.
How is it a national security issue?
Woke up from a coma since 1994 recently?
Yes actually, can you explain it like I’m 5?
That would only get us back to 2018.
Just spitballing an answer here.
Pretty much all electronic communication people receive is, in some way, dependent on private industry. Sure, many places have tornado sirens and stuff, but without details on what those sirens mean we have no idea what to actually do in response. We have emergency alert systems through cell networks, but I’m still at the mercy of my private carrier functioning properly to receive that.
Emergency response is an angle I hadn’t considered, and that’s a great point.
Stock price moving is not a tech story.
Yeah, too many things in this community are news about things that aren’t related to technology just because they pertain to a company that happens to use some technology as its product. However, this time, I think there is tech news to be gleaned in this story, as it indicates a shift in which tech people might be adopting, transitioning from what is still essentially one-to-many broadcast towards one-to-one, on-demand, streaming services. To me, this news confirms a trend in adopting one tech over another; this time , it’s not just about the politics or finances of a company that happens to sell something that has been considered technological. But maybe I just feel like seeing it that way right now. I could very well be a hypocrite in my judgment of “techness”.
It’s just a projection miss, not a massive shift. Comcast has ~32 million broadband subscribers so a decline of 18k is only ~0.06%.
I believe the article talked about Xfinity and their 5G subscriber increase as well. That is not surprising since they were doing some really shitty dark pattern stuff on their website for it. It wouldn’t surprise me if half those people didn’t even know they had signed up for it.

Was a cord cutter until it went from $35 a month to $60-80 a month pre-covid. I switched back to (unfortunately) Comcast in 2019 because it was ultimately cheaper and had more channels. Got cable and internet for $150 a month.
By the time I cancelled a few months ago, it was up to $225 and I hadn’t changed a thing.
Back to 🏴☠️ and fiber internet.
Personally, I’d rather cut down on what I sub to than go back to cable. Oh and you can’t take my fiber from my cold dead hands.

I’m about to cancel comcast. They always find ways to sneakily increase the price. The real issue for me though is it has become so unreliable. I work from home and cannot tolerate the regular outages during business hours.
I’d google it but most of my outages were related to the god awful modem my service provider included in the plan, I bought my own and issues have reduced drastically.
I have my own modem. Also, I check their service outage tool and it’s them not me.
Dang, that sucks. I hate Comcast as much as the next guy, but I do have to say, I’ve only ever had bad service (connection) maybe on three occasions over the last 20 years.
Couldn’t happen to a better company…
ISPs can see your data being transferred, and they can monitor it actively. This can be done to anyone connected to the internet through their network. Trade Secrets, National Security secrets and even your search history can be browsed if you’re encrypting your traffic.
