I don’t know much about Pokémon cards, but I know this is a rare holo. Is it worth much?
Backstory: my son (6yo) kept talking lately about a Mewtwo he got at a birthday party and how he’s going to trade it with his classmate for a Darkrai, but he lost his Mewtwo somewhere in the car. So yesterday I finally get around to searching below the car seat to find this. A holo Mewtwo Vstar, in a protective sleeve too. I asked him repeatedly if it was really in the goodie bag (making sure the b-day kid didn’t just give it away on their own without parents knowing), but yeah, everyone got cards in their bags (but doesn’t sound like anyone got something like this one). For now I told him to just keep it safe and not use it to play with and definitely don’t trade it away.
I’m sorry to tell you this, but I’m 99% sure this is fake. This looks like it came off of an inkjet printer. The corners aren’t cut right, you can see the top edge is too narrow, and the texture doesn’t look like it’s actually a texture, more like a photocopy.
But the biggest giveaway is the snowflake hollow pattern. I can’t say I’ve ever seen that pattern on any card, and typically a themed pattern is used on Pokemon that match the type. In this case, a snowflake pattern would be used on an Ice-type Pokemon, which Mewtwo certainly is not.
This may have started life as a decent proxy card, but I would never be able to tell you this is a legitimate card. 0/10
I did think the holo foil looked added on by hand, but I’ve never seen a real holo, so had no reference. And I was wondering about the snowflakes too, but again no frame of reference.
Edit: I studied it closely now and it’s a real card that someone stuck a printout on top and then covered with holo foil. It’s easiest to see at the bottom, where the copyright text is, where the printed paper overlaps the real card.
Haha yeah this foil design is absolutely fake. Never any big snowflakes. Doesn’t make any sense. Would look cool as an Articuno card or some ice pokemon.
