Afaik Apes are a thing humans are included under. The apes are the family Hominidae great apes and include the currently alive primates humans, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees and the lesser apes, gibbons.
I mean, this would be the first theory to try. Then after finding many specimens, if various other ancestors are found, then you change the theory. That’s science for you, always improving.

I believe you are correct.
It appears the confusion is around great apes VS lesser apes and the way it’s worded.
We are all descended from great apes, but lesser apes are our cousins.
