Millions of us were saying that at the time, and we still are today. If you weren’t listening, that’s your own fault. If you didn’t believe us, that’s your own fault.

Mr. Obama, you caved on all of the major issues. You were a great candidate, an amazing speech giver, and a mediocre president. And that’s OK – we would be happy with mediocre today – but you don’t get to tell us what’s good for the party when you are the perfect example of its biggest problem.

In reality we have a lot of political power. We don’t just choose from the options that magically appear in front of u in cute binary packages. That’s not what happens every day of our lives.

That’s a nice idea, and if you can maintain that distinction good for you, but the inevitable widespread consequence of loving one’s country more is that one loves other countries less. And that leads to xenophobia, which in turn leads to racism.

That’s how it starts, but it ends in the same hell. Once you decide your country stands for something, you inevitably stop seeing how it has failed at doing that thing for centuries.

For example, consider freedom and equality. The US had widespread slavery until the late 1800s, and even now the prison industrial slavery complex provides 100% slave labor, and most of the slaves are minorities. So when people talk about freedom and equality as a U.S. value, when they talk about the melting point, they have to pretend the slaves don’t exist.

Another way of looking at it is, “You might say your country stands for this ideal, but when we find massive examples of it failing, then you’re arguing with reality. You might wish your country stood for it, but it doesn’t, at least not now. Quit lying to yourself.”

Good. Patriotism leads to nationalism, xenophobia, and racism.

It’s not we that have become evil. I think it’s imperative that people properly consider who is doing the evil shit.

Many years ago I was visiting some country in Central America, and they were not angry that I was American even though the American government had done horrible things to their country, because they knew that I had no control over what those crazy motherfuckers did.

And that doesn’t mean that everyone is powerless, that we shouldn’t try to make a difference. That’s a different conversation.

And if you’re wondering where the US goes for help, I’m not sure what you mean, but there have been a variety of peacekeeping missions and wars over the past few decades where other countries worked alongside the United States. Whether you think those military operations were justified is a different question, but if you’re looking for which countries worked together, you can easily find out by browsing Wikipedia for 20 minutes.
