I’m stunned by the absolute ignorance of this comment.

Please stay in school kids or somehow you’ll wind up thinking slavery is comparable to school.

I don’t have the energy to full educate you on the horrors of slavery. But I can assure you having to go to school, recieve a free education, and fill in a scantron every now and again is not comparable in the slightest.

In this case I understand not downsizing until your kids are established with a job/place to live.

Depending on equity and their mortgage payment it may not even be possible to downsize without paying more per month. That’s the insanity of the current market.

Remember this is an occupied family home with an unoccupied room. Not a whole property.

    What would you suggest?

A lot of kids move back after college. I definitely wouldn’t downsize until my family was secure and for sure no longer needed the space.

Now the question is it better to allow that space sit vacant or rent out the space.

I think there is a defensible position for renting out a temporarily unused space in your primary home versus buying vacant properties solely to rent.

Sure you can argue they dont need that space, but a lot of kids return after college. If I had kids I’d only downsize once they are well established. It’s about ensuring the security of your family and ensuring they have a place to come back to.

Is it better to let that sit space vacant for 4+ years though?

You could double everything in this post too and that’s only 60% consumption.

    • 20 m² of personal living space + 20 m² for every 2 ppl as bathroom / kitchen
    • 4200 kcal/day
    • 2800 kWh/year, but this already includes public services (education/healthcare)
    • 1 washing machine per 10 ppl
    • 2.4 kg clothing / 6 months
    • wear tops for 1.5 days and bottoms for 7.5 days without washing
    • 1 laptop per 2 people with a yearly power consumption of 62 kWh. (bizzarely they talk about an 800 MHz computer and seem to confuse HDD and RAM). If your gaming computer used 400 W you could use it for 300 hr/year.

That seems a lot more reasonable to me and we still come in under carrying capacity
